I am an Avon Representative with a large business.In my business I do both-- discounting at times as a customer appreciation or a discount on a specific item ( example-- 20% off all jewelry or 20% off skin care) but always with a "required amount they need to spend. Giving away a free item is best and I teach my team this.. lets say a free shower gel with every $15 you spend. The shower gel does not cost me $1.99- - it may cost me $1.31, but it does two things. If I have 10 customers who do this, I've just added $19.99 to my total sales. We're commission based, so those added sales could put me into the next sales level in which I now earn more on my entire order... so giving a little does usually get results!....
