No, they are not obsolete. You need a plan to know where you want to go and how you are going to get there. I know it's an old question but thought I'd still give my input. I have worked on retainers in the past as well so the clients could make sure that I was available for a set number of hours each month. It is possible to charge per project as well but you need to make sure that you get all the parameters of the project before you price your services. Several years ago I purchased a couple guides to desktop publishing standards that I still use for estimating the average amount of time it takes to do certain tasks. With these you can calculate time based on industry standards so your client isn't overcharged if you are slow on certain tasks and you aren't penalized for having above-average skills on others. This helps the client feel more comfortable as well when you estimate/charge time. You can still find these resources online if you are interested. (Desktop Production Time Standards and How to Price Graphic Design and DTP Services by Robert C. Brenner). Hope this gives you some more insight. Best of luck!
