I have been in practice for some 30 years and it depends on the client. Today, your first step is to create a website, both because it gives you credibility and becuase it creates visiblity. Most first time clients look to the web, by using their cells phones, to find an attorney. Of course, it depends on the type of law you intend to practice, as probate clients looking to for a will, are not necessarily looking on the web. Then you can put your name on court- appointed lists, if your local courts appoint attorneys. You should attend functions at the Chamber of Commerce, Lions and Rotary clubs and let them know you are an attorney and new and available, and also attend Art walks, concerts, and other venues where lots of people go, and make sure you have plenty of business cards to hand out. Family and friends are also valuable for obtaining referrals, so dont forget them. Whenever you interact with people, like your mechanic, barber or hairdresser, real estate professional, bartender and waitress, let them know and hand them a card. Good luck
