Tax preparation is best left to tax professionals. To become a tax professional, it's obviously more than simply completing forms in a tax preparation software. Since you indicate you have been preparing taxes for a number of years, I'll assume you have a basic knowledge. That is a good start. Next you should look for a good "professional" tax software to meet at least the needs of present clients and those you seek near term. Many are available but not all would be recommended. I'd recommend you simultaneously seek a good professional organization that can support you with your current knowledge and help you grow your practice from year to year by expanding your knowledge base. The National Society of Tax Professionals is a great organization catering to small tax practices across the country with a range of basic knowledge to those with 30+ years of experience (www.nstp.org). With live seminars as well as many webinars, you can learn and grow at your own pace. Once you have a good knowledge base, you then should market yourself and your practice. Being good at what you do will generate repeat business and referrals.

Most tax professionals are finding that their referrals are coming from their current client base. The potential client may do some research of the tax professional and go to their website for information about the tax firm and the types of services offered. Tax professionals are also utilizing several electronic choices to communicate with their clients such as obtaining tax information through the online tax organizer or establishing a secure portal to exchange information. There are many ways for the tax professional to communicate with the public and their client base and the website is an important component in reaching out, collecting and sharing information.
