We have added the ability for clients to digitally sign documents, improved SEO, built a new and improved web site (not live yet), implemented a new and improved CRM (not live yet), migrated to online training for Business Brokers, increased the frequency of webinars for clients, improved our online recruiting ability and automated the assessments of prospective recruits. All of these improvements have cost money but will serve us for coming years and in the end will pay for themselves many time over.

The LRT phase 2 will help, the city is growing, employment is high, interest rates are low and most main street businesses are doing well. This will be a good year for the local economy and a good year for Sunbelt as there is an increase in the number of business owners retiring and there is high demand for good businesses.

What they do not want is to start training someone who may retire soon or incur health issues. I am around your age and not the oldest broker at Sunbelt. I am comfortable recruiting new brokers in their 50s and 60s as they have many good years left. Once they are in their 70s I would take them on only if they can show me that their skills and experience mean a very short training period. So look for opportunities that you can master very quickly and almost immediately be productive.

Some can be mitigated through insurance, some through great customer and supplier relations, some through great systems and process, some through well thought out and well executed hiring and training practices, some through cross training to decrease dependency on individuals, some through good fiscal management to decrease financial risk, some through work place safety training etc. You can not eliminate risk but can reduce your exposure through the right planning and actions. My business is selling businesses on behalf of our clients and we find that most business owners wait to long before engaging us and their businesses suffer as a result. They suffer burn out, health issues, or have lost the passion and are coasting. Businesses do not very often coast up. The result is they do not realize as much when they sell.

Profit sharing is effective, motivating, and provides a sense of ownership. Much better than creating minority shareholders with all the complications that entails. Business Brokerage looked like a good fit for me. I started with one office however my desire to help more people has led to having more than 30 offices across Canada.
