Olohana Foundation
Olohana is a collaborative focused on building community capacity, cohesiveness, resilience and emergency preparedness. Key to Olohana's approach is M. Kalani Souza's unique methodologies and diverse, inclusive approach to accomplishing these ends.
A recent example is The Big Blue O: a performance project with both original and familiar music designed as a platform to increase awareness of the need for community capacity to audiences less likely to have considered it previously.
One of the key principles to understanding about our approach is the simple concept that collaboration, cooperation and group process are difficult, learned skills that must be exercised. It is often said that adversity brings us together: while this is often true it certainly isn't always the case. If we are already accustomed to working together in the absence of adversity we will be that much more able to handle emergencies as whole communities. As in many areas of our lives, individual action and preparedness is not enough in the face of a widespread emergency: it takes all of us.
Another key principle of Olohana's approach is cultural competency. We often work in culturally and economically diverse arenas and it is crucial to bridge the cultural gaps that threaten clear communication and understanding, let alone true collaboration.
