Dennis learned his skills as a woodworker while building custom bass guitars for a company located in perkasie, pa. For 7 years he mastered his craft as a luthier/woodworker also learning cabinetmaking and other guitar building techniques. To give back the knowledge passed to him from his mentors, Dennis enrolled in Temple University to become a wood shop teacher. Woodworking gave Dennis a purpose in life at an age where youth often flounder from job to job. “Other young people could benefit from my experience”, thought Dennis. His purpose became more clear at Temple University when he graduated Suma cum laude in only 3 years with a degree in secondary education and became nationally certified to teach cabinetmaking. But, becoming a teacher was more difficult than expected. Trade schools started combining their carpentry and cabinetmaking programs to cut costs so demand for teachers was diminished. Dennis took what he learned and chose to broaden his skills and knowledge in carpentry. “This was a huge transition” states Dennis. “I was used to measuring in thousandths of an inch with calipers so using a tape measure and measuring in 1/8ths and 1/16s was a challenge”. Dennis found a home in carpentry while learning the trade. In just 5 years he was contracting and building additions and decks on his own and stayed for another 5 years gaining a good reputation and a solid customer base. But the “long hours and sleepless nights eventually caught up”. “ I had to stop” Dennis Stated. “ That’s not what I wanted for me or my family. “I was completely burned out” especially, in 2008 when the last housing bubble burst and everything in construction just stopped. In construction, if you’re not building, you’re not getting paid. “Things got really tight”. “ I ended up staying home to watch the kids instead of paying the 1000$/ month child care.” Eventually Dennis found work at a group home for disadvantaged kids teaching life skills. “The pay was a lot less but it gave me time to get some sanity back into my life”, Dennis states. He didn’t regret putting the tools down but some say once a builder, always a builder. After 3 years Dennis began working for J. R. Maxwell builders, full time, as a lead carpenter. Once again, Dennis spent the next 5 years honing his skills and knowledge in the trade. To be continued
