How We Got Started

Our company started as a small commercial print shop in the middle 80s and progressed into graphic arts. In the early '90s we sold our printing presses as the print industry underwent a major contraction that continues to this day. We instead concentrated on graphic arts and design work for the trade. Designing web sites naturally followed.

Today, we run servers and host for small and mid sized businesses and organizations. Our design staff creates custom artwork for web sites, and our copywriters put the message on the site.

We are easy to work with, and offer a warranty on all of our designs. Our hosting is reliable, we guarantee it in writing.

Change this several times a week to keep it fresh. If you have a business facebook page, tie the specials in on facebook and your other social media. Include it on your web page, and begin collecting email addresses to send the specials out to as a reminder to customers. You should notice a difference in your business within a few weeks as people begin to notice your sign and look for it.

(more) The rule I always follow is if our time investment and costs are less than hiring an outside agency then we do the project/work/tasks in house. If the time/cost is more than hiring out, then we find a quality vendor and send them the work. We have several vendors who we use regularly and have a great relationship with each of them. AmeriWeb Hosting creates, hosts, manages and markets web sites. Certain tasks have such a big learning curve, it is better to hire an expert. Certain tasks are changing constantly and require re-education. The time invested to stay up to date is often greater than hiring an expert. We have contractual relationships with certain experts. Our IT people are excellent and efficient in the many scripts that run on a web server (and must be updated regularly) including Apache and the many security modules used. I understand what they do and can also do it, but a task that would take me 10 hours can be accomplished by them in 1 hour. Same example with graphics. I do much of our graphics work in house, but some jobs are complicated. What would take me 10 hours and many revisions is accomplished by one of our 3 contracted graphic artists in an hour or so. Again, could I be more productive doing other things? When speaking with a prospect for our services, I often explain that they could teach themselves how to do exactly what we do. But is it an effective investment of their time? If it takes them 100 hours to learn all aspects of my job, including design techniques, writing code, customer expectations, SEO, graphics, marketing, email setup, site security, purchase external programs for graphics editing, site creation, marketing and so much more; they are probably saving the equivalent of $5 per hour on their time. OR they can pay me $895 for a custom web site ready to go. I make money as all the costs/training/updating etc is not charged to only one site; I apply this knowledge and access to software across approx 140 sites. I charge the customer less than what it would cost them to do the same job for themselves, and manage to make a fair profit for my efforts. Win-Win !

When hiring a talented person, you should ALWAYS see some of their work for comparison. A large firm will typically employee talented people, just as a small firm does. The only difference I have found is in collateral services. A small firm may not have access to their own wide format printers in house, or other resources that a larger firm may have. BUT a small firm can easily navigate around this deficiency through referrals to other top notch providers. Small or large, in my book it comes down to talent and resources.

(more) As a web developer and small business owner, offering a freebie is a great tool to get someone to open up to you, and begin the trust process. In addition to web design, we offer marketing, copy-writing and graphics. These services will often carry over into a brick and mortar location with flyers, marketing plans even telephone scripts. For existing customers, I ALWAYS give away freebies. Work on their site (small bits that cannot be too time consuming) is part of the service I do. I also offer a warranty that their site will remain accurate, and if phone numbers, addresses, etc should change I always update that free of charge. Even if they are no longer customers (rare). For prospects, I ALWAYS talk about what will work for them, and give examples of what they should be doing. I do share a few of my 'secrets' in the hopes that they will just let me do the work for them. I figure it works about 80% of the time, with the other 20% not making for great customers anyway. Poor prospects will see one thing done, let their contract lapse, and make a mess of my work trying to do it themselves on the cheap. For marketing purposes, I ALWAYS give away some form of freebie. Some businesses will give away imprinted pens or key chains. I share information in my e-newsletter, for example. Sometimes just a fun link is enough to do the trick, and it costs nothing. For a great example of what I have shared in the past, see https://www.flightradar24.com/... Free doesn't have to mean giving away all of your services. Helping a small business owner out goes a long way in establishing your credentials as an industry expert. And as far as the e-newsletter freebie stuff, well, it's just fun.

They tend not to have a working knowledge of computers and are, in general, intimidated by the thought of creating a site. While the pool of prospects who fit this criteria is shrinking quickly, we still do seek them out and truly enjoy doing work for them. The excitement when they begin seeing results for their business is contagious!

For our customers, we generally hand code each site. It gives us more flexibility and Google seems to like a coded site over a CMS or sitebuilder. I know it is old school to do things manually, but it works better for our customers! (more) For our customers, we generally hand code each site.
