If, on the other hand, you want to keep the exemption, for yourself , then your son should file his return and mark the option that indicates he is a dependent on another return.  Finally, although identity theft is prevalent in today's society, I am not inclined to jump to that conclusion immediately.  My personal opinion is that if your son wants the exemption to increase his refund, I would leave everything the way it is and pay him the additional amount he would receive from the exemption yourself.  Given that he is your son (mine is 15), I am quite confident you are used to dolling out money to him anyway.   Just my two cents.

(more) You know, this is a great question. In my view, you need someone who has operated their own shop and can understand the goings on off a small business owner.  They should also have a team behind them.  And I do not mean someone who has run an accounting firm.  Please, indulge me for a moment.  I have heard time and time again clients complain that they believe they have a "cash flow problem".  From my experience,  most of these clients have a different issue:  they have a "cash retention problem".  Most clients have an excellent inflow of cash.  What they lack is the skill to manage the funds while in their possession. Having been a CPA for 25 plus years.  One thing I learned early on in my career is that most of us don't really have the practical experience necessary to advise clients on such issues.   I remember, when I was a young CPA I was asked by a client if I had ever operated a business.  It was, in my opinion, a perfectly legitimate question and it got me to thinking.  So, after spending ten years in public accounting in both tax and audit (I preferred tax) and obtaining g a graduate degree in organizational management, transitioned to private industry where I progressed from a Controller to Chief Financial Officer over a decade and a half or so.  I also started several small businesses, mostly in retail and automotive, and sold them.  Now, in my own practice, I truly feel as though I have significant value to bring to a client. My point?  Fnd someone who you can relate to AND who has practical advice for your company and industry.  Not just canned answers they learned from a B-school textbook.  Interview them.  Decide if you even like them.  If not, move on.  There are a lot of us to choose from.  But, most importantly, avoid those who have all the answers like the plaque.  Your consultant should have a team available to them in order to get answers they do not know.  That team could include attorneys, investment advisors, and insurance experts among others. A true consultant does not have all the answers but, knows where to get them in short order.  That is my two cents.  Finally!

Just one man's opinion.  It works for me.
