Local Discussions What's happening in the Redmond business community
What is your expectation of your CPA or tax planner? Do you expect him or her to proactively look for tax strategies or tax saving ideas for you, or do you think you should brinig them to them for their opinion?
Have you ever learned that your trusted tax advisor "missed" somethinig and if so, what was your response?
I am truly interested. There are over 72,000 pages of tax code, I certianly don't expect anyone to be familiar with all of it. On the other hand, if my CPA or tax advisor doesn't bring something to me, how can I be expected to know about it.

Such a great question—and one I hear come up often with business owners.
I tend to look at it as a partnership. It starts with really understanding your CPA’s specialty and who they work best with, to make sure it’s the right fit from the beginning. Not every CPA is going to be proactive in the same way, and that alignment matters.
From there, I take a more collaborative approach. I don’t expect my CPA to carry the full weight of every strategy—but I also don’t believe it should fall solely on the business owner either.
What I’ve found most valuable is being in conversations with other business owners, hearing what strategies they’re leveraging, and then bringing those ideas into planning conversations with my CPA. That’s where the real value happens—when insights are shared, vetted, and applied intentionally.
I recently facilitated an entire NIA business owner meeting focused on tax strategies for business owners, and this was a big part of the discussion. The takeaway across the board was that the most successful business owners aren’t relying on one source—they’re combining a strong CPA relationship with a broader network of insights.
Curious what others have found works best for them—especially when it comes to making that CPA relationship more proactive.
