When you enter a retail store it is always great to receive a greeting although I do not think what is said is as important as how it is said. When you are delivering a greeting it should be friendly and welcoming. If you are going to deliver the greeting in a negative tone then you are likely better to not say anything. You do not want to scare people off.

If your store is trying to present a specific image then you may want to come up with something a bit more catchy to say that will align with that image. as you mentioned a fishing store asking if you have been fishing lately. This will get the customer's attention and likely to start a conversation. this works well when you are targeting a niche market. in this example, it really doesn't matter what the customer says in response to your greeting you can start the conversation and steer it into a recommendation that will help show your store's expertise and build a relationship with that customer.

Just make sure your greeting is welcoming, make eye contact, share a smile and let the customer know you are happy to assist them if needed.
