How We Got Started

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Michigan Real Estate is the brokerage we, with my wife Kathy, chose because of the Reach, Range, and Influence of the brand. Choosing the best company we encountered in all our years of working with REALTORS® was paramount! My wife passed away earlier this year. I do seek to reach higher to honor her wishes, as she was the CEO of the Battle Creek Association of REALTORS® for many years and held a Michigan Real Estate License for over 30 years, and was so focused on serving others!

(more) As a contractor for 40 years before coming to real estate, get a trained set of eyes to teach you in-person. Things become more obvious with experience and hands-on training! If you are a REALTOR® in the Grand Rapids area, call me and I accompany you to show you a few things you can observe. Experience is the best teacher. There are things you need to experience to understand. Here are my top 10! 10 most expensive homeownership maintenance errors The sump pump that you fail to replace before the only thawed ground is around your basement as the snow is melting and all that water is heading into your basement.  2.  You fail to turn off the water in winter before you leave the property and the heating goes off and the ice lifts your home off the foundation as it freezes and destroys everything below it by the water damage and the force of expanding ice. 3.  That roof rake you failed to use to remove the snow before the freezing and thawing ice forming ice dams and forces the water to flow into your home. 4.  The vertical adjacent structures where walls rise out of roofs and you fail to build these wall structures like the wall of a pool and the snowdrifts against them and that thaw leads that water through that wall into your home. 5.  You fail to realize that your landscaping for water management around your home needs to flow water away from your house instead of into it. 6.  When you do not use enough downspouts around your home and your fail to account for the roofs that drain from one to the other and you actually are draining 3 roofs with one small downspout and you have Niagara Falls coming out your gutters. (Make sure you clean the eaves and debris out of them too!) 7. Drain the sprinklers and blow them out so you can save the cost of digging up the whole yard and replacing your current one. 8.  You are missing a vapor barrier on the interior structures of your home, get ready for the ruined, OSB sheeting, the water-soaked insulation, and the mold that is going to form and require expensive remediation.  9. Do not neglect tree overgrowth and conditions that can leave branches that rub holes in the roof and branches that fall from the tree through the roof and even trees that fall onto your home. 10. Neglecting the ice and snow on walkways and drives can lead to expensive legal bills when you get sued for being lazy. Bonus: Roofs need to have ventilation or the roof develops a moisture build-up, sag, and fail! You ought to see some of the things I have seen!
