I include this because, as a web site developer, it is part of my job to deliver a site that helps your business and that includes getting found. I also work with the client to develop a clear marketing message that communicates quickly. For me, not including this is would be poor service. Many business people know little about websites and marketing. They depend on me make them a website that works for them and that includes getting found and making sales.

This often ends up selling nothing to nobody.   For my web business, I chose to target small businesses - mom & pop shops, inventors, service providers, consultants and the like. The types of websites they need are a good fit for my skill set, not too big or terribly complicated, and I feel like I can really help them. It later evolved into tighter focus on small businesses in my region - Southern Oregon and Northern California. You'd think a web design company would work with clients all around the country - and I have. But I have found that my clients prefer working with someone local. Being local helps in my work too. Knowing the area helps in developing the clients marketing message as well as for search engine optimization. I am tuned into the local buzz. Finally, there is the sense of community. As part of the same business community, we are all pulling together as a team. Our shared knowledge and common experiences make the work more congenial and pleasurable.

In addition, in developing your marketing message, remember the saying "Don't sell the steak, sell the SIZZLE." What marketers mean is don't just provide a list of features. Instead, tell customers how it will make them feel, and what problem it will solve for them.

I've done a number of websites for vacation places and properties for sale. My opinion is that, on this type of website, great photos are a must. If potential customers can visualize themselves in the photos, thats closes the deal. (more) I've done a number of websites for vacation places and properties for sale.
