Trademark is automatic by use.  As soon as you put a mark in print it is protected as a trademark.  You can register the trademark, but it is not necessary.  Registration establishes a date of adoption of the trademark for purposes of enforcing your rights to exclusive use of the trademark. However, if you do not register the trademark you are still protected.  You would just have to meet a burden of proof as to when and how you adopted the trademark.
