Is it really necessary to hire an SEO company, for up to several hundred dollars a month, to get more visitors to my website(s) or are there ways to get more attention that I can implement myself?

I had my first commercial web site up 6 months before Bill Gates had ever seen the Internet, so I speak from experience. Companies who charge monthly fees and make monthly changes to your web site are doing you a disservice. Think about it, if I make a change to my web site and it takes Google 20+ days to update their database or longer how can I track if there is an improvement? You may have to wait 60 days or more to see the settled out results. It takes time. I recommend quarterly tracking and if needed making SEO adjustments.
