I wish I would of taken a class on how business taxes and payroll works. It’s very important to do it right and be aware of the cost of it all. (more) I wish I would of taken a class on how business taxes and payroll works. It’s very important to do it right and be aware of the cost of it all.

(more) After spending four years in the military and then working a lot of odd jobs, I found myself working as a security officer pulling 12 hour shifts switching from nights to days every 3 weeks. Needless to say, I was very miserable, but making good money to support my wife and our newborn child. One day, I decided to take a large risk and walk away from this job with no plan in mind, because I felt like it was killing me mentally. I promised my wife when I quit this job I would do whatever it took to make us okay, but I couldn't stay any longer because in one month I would hit my two year mark and start making significantly more money and it would be extremely hard to ever leave. When I quit I was terrified, but I immediately went to work with my uncle, whom my dad was also working with, doing welding and pipefitting, contracting at a local plant. After doing this for a couple weeks, I realized my father and I had a much better option. I had just finished my four-year degree online through DeVry University, getting a Bachelor's in Business Technical Management. Knowing that my dad had nearly 40 years’ experience in the welding field, I felt like we could start our own contractors business. My dad's brother was having trouble doing it and pretty much walked away from his own business for personal reasons. My dad and I, after much pleading and convincing on my part, sold a four wheeler for $6,000 and partnered with another individual who fronted $13,000. We put this money together and all of our savings and started buying tools, safety equipment, licensing, insurance, etc. to get started. Luckily, my dad loves to buy tools so we already had a nice amount of stuff we needed to get the ball rolling. After hours of deciding on a business name, designing a logo on my dad's AutoCAD program, and getting some business cards made, we started spreading our name to all of the local industrial plants. There are so many industrial plants in this area of Arkansas we had no trouble making contacts. Between the contacts we already had through my dad's brother and the new contacts we made, we were already making about $5,000 a week working out of a shop in my dad's yard. Later that year, because of differences of opinion in how professional jobs should be left when we were done, we bought our partner out for $20,000 and struck out solely under the Roberts name. We struggled many times learning how ruthless business life can be and butted heads when our passions got the better of us. There are times where we teetered on the edge of many proverbial precipices, but we never faltered and refused to fall. Our own blood, sweat, and tears have fueled this business and are ingrained into the very tools we use. We now invoice roughly $20,000 - $30,000 a week, have two large shops on a five-acre plot, 10 company vehicles, 5 trailers, a forklift, a lull, an aerial lift, and even a golf cart. We have established trusted and dependable relationships with many plants. In five years, we have grown exponentially and we learned how to run this business mostly through Google and YouTube, lol. You could pretty much make a comedy/drama sitcom out of our daily lives, but we put our hearts and souls into this business every day. We now do welding and pipefitting, insulation services, and even run a full mechanic shop where we do custom builds, standard diesel and gas repairs, as well as aftermarket upgrades. Some days I look back on those hopeless feelings in my military career and my time as a security guard, and thank God for how blessed my family has been. I kept my promise to my wife and now I am in control of how my life goes and how successful I am.
