I am currently seeing clients in-person and online. I prefer in-person because I specialize in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and I prefer the immediacy of in-person sessions. In the office, I often have my clients wear pulse oximeters during conflict discussions so that I can monitor physiology and intervene if they become flooded. I also have them take notes when they are in the listener role so that they can summarize and validate their partner's perspective.
However, I am finding online couples therapy better than I expected. I find that I have to be more conscious about dyadic dialogue because the tendency is for couples to want to look at the screen and talk to me, rather than each other. However, it can be done and can have a feeling of immediacy and presence.
I think the most effective way is to specialize, to develop a niche, and to provide potential clients with valuable content and information before they come to your office.

I think the most effective way is to specialize, to develop a niche, and to provide potential clients with valuable content and information before they come to your office.
This requires first seeking additional training, skill development, and experience. For example, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Gottman Therapist, which means I have been certified in a particular school of couples therapy based on science and observation.
Second, you must identify and speak to your ideal client through a quality website, informational blogs, Facebook, and other social media. It is not simply a matter of advertizing: it is more about providing quality content that is helpful to people and will lead potential clients to see you as an expert in the field or area.
Of course, this also means investing in a webpage and SEO (i.e. Google Ads, Facebook, etc.). Listing in directories, like Psychology Today, also helps. However, I have found that potential clients who come through Psychology Today are often shopping around and are more concerned about insurance and cost than specialization or skills. In contrast, potential clients who come through my website (or more specialized directories, like the Gottman Referral Network or the National Registry of Marriage-Friendly Therapists) and have read some of my pages and blogs simply ask when then can schedule an appointment.

You can reach a larger and more targeted audience and you have more opportunity to create a dialogue with your ideal clients. It is more of an intermediate and long-term marketing strategy and it involves positioning yourself as a trusted expert in the field by providing potential clients with useful information.
For the participants in couples workshops, I send them hand written thank you cards. For my regular counseling clients, I verbalize my appreciation and maintain the lines of communication open.
