As a mom of neurodiverse children, I've felt that same stomach-drop when schools called. But when a school psychologist told me my son would never learn at just 3.5 years old, I knew that couldn't be true—because the nature of children is wanting to learn and belong. That school professional saw limitations, but I saw a brilliant mind that just needed a different approach. After 25+ years working with children in out-of-school programs and watching too many amazing kids get labeled instead of supported, I founded SOAR to be the advocate I wished I'd had. Now I help families turn frustration into action—because when a child struggles, it's telling us something important about what needs to change in their environment, not in them.
