Hi Jory! I happened to come across your post and thought I may chime in.
There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding to work with a payment processor. The obvious one that most people look to is the payment processing rates. However, solely looking at those numbers can provide an inaccurate picture, as it does not account for other fees that you may be charged.
Companies like Square disrupted the industry by offering what is mostly a consistent rate. I say "mostly" because most people do not realize that they actually don't pay a flat rate: Square's current rate of 2.6% + $0.10 applies to most, but not all, transactions. If you click here, you can see that they do actually charge a much higher rate for certain transactions.
I won't bog you down with an in-depth discussion of the inner workings of payment processing as it really does get complicated.
To put it simply, Square's one-size-fits-all rate may be quite good for some businesses, but not others. For example, a coffee shop with a $5 average transaction amount is going to end up paying a much higher percentage of their take to Square than a lawyer with a $500 average transaction.
Most merchants can save money by considering alternative payment processors. Most other processors have the ability to customize your rates to fit your style of business in order to achieve the most savings possible for you.
Okay, moving on from rates, there are some other important factors to consider:
- Setup: do you need mobile hardware? stationary hardware? full-blown POS? Virtual terminal? E-commerce? Obviously, you need to make sure that the provider can set things up the way you need.
- Contract: do you have to enter into a contract term, either for processing or equipment?
- Cost: are there monthly costs? Hidden fees? Upfront costs? Make sure to do your homework. These can often wipe away any potential savings on the rates side.
- Features: Does the product come with any additional software features, integrations, etc. that can help save you time and grow your business?
- Reputation: does the company have an overall positive reputation, have they been around a while, do they provide 24/7, USA based customer support?
Anyway, just some things that I would consider when deciding on a processor. My company, SpotOn has a $1000 guarantee that we can save any business money on their payment processing. However, more importantly, we have a suite of tools that each of our merchants receives that are designed to help streamline their communications, improve their online reputation, save time, and incentivize customers to visit more often.
I hope some of this was helpful! Would love to continue this discussion and help answer any other questions you may have.
