Thank you for sharing these stories, Karo and for providing a way for businesses to connect. Our Non Profit, Helpers Community’s mission is to enrich the lives of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities. We do so in three ways: residence homes, grants, and a retail store which sells only product created by artists with Developmental Disabilities or through product from organizations with a similar mission. The pandemic has impacted the organization, as it has our broader Bay Area community and the world. The retail store, Helpers Artisan Boutique, which provides an on site job training for individuals with developmental disabilities to learn retail operations and merchandising skills, was closed for 3 1/2 months due to the pandemic. It reopened in July and retail selling and operations continued. The training could not continue due to Covid protocols. Helpers continued to buy product and support partner organizations in the Bay Area through 2020 despite challenges with the store remaining open, providing salary to the trainer who also operates the store during the store shut down.
Despite the pandemic the organization was able to disburse grants with increased funds to organizations meeting their criteria, some of which included funds for digital resources so educational programs could continue on line vs in person providing a connection to those individuals separated from people, funds for building renovations, rent suspension for a period of time during the pandemic for the residence homes, and funds for specific training programs.
Thank you to our supporters for enabling us to continue to enrich the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities during this time. Visit Helpers Artisan Boutique at 1947 Union St, SF. Learn more about Helpers Community. Www.helperssf.org
