I love mastermind groups as long as they are structured and follow a predictable path. Without this, they can wander and degrade. It's important that the meetings are prescheduled a year in advance and members only be allowed 1-2 absences for the year. Make sure the group does not have any competing businesses and stays at 10 or fewer. I have been in multiple masterminds over the years. The longest was 15 years.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for sharing your ideas and experience with Masterminds. Structure and aim are crucial aspects of effectively run Masterminds. "Without this, they can wander and degrade." Yes! Nobody wants their time to be wasted on just TALK. Likewise, we don't want to be connected with those who are not engaged. The integrity, flow, and focus of the group needs to be well led and adhered to.

I appreciate your observance that members should not have competing businesses. In the case of coaching, however, many can has similar missions, but the way around that is in the understanding of unique offer/service. My service as an Empowerment Coach, Speaker, and Writer, for example, is a unique blend that no other coach in our Mastermind has. I deliver my services through group coaching, one-on-one coaching (very few, at a high price) and through my four signature workshops. My clients do a lot of writing. I do not know many other coaches who do all three - coaching, speaking (with their own signature programs) and writing books.

Yes, agreed, ten or fewer people in a group is best. Somewhere between four - eight is ideal, in my experience.

Are you currently part of a Mastermind, Mark?

Hi Mark, how did you find these Mastermind groups?

Dyan, there are many around YPO, EO, Vistage and many at the local or industry specific levels. You can check with the local Chamber of Commerce for a start. I was referred into the first one I ever did. The remainder came out of certification programs like Profit First and StoryBrand. I was invited into them once I had become certified.
