We are thinking of doing a referral program to generate business and exposure for our furniture company. Anyone have thoughts regarding this and has anyone had any success with it?

I'm a firm beleaver of the WORD OF MOUTH FREE advertising... your customers will always be your prime advertising and your best source to draw NEW customers. , the new customers become old and if they are happy with your product or services the word of mouth will continue on and on. Always give something away to who ever refers you a new customer/client and do it in a BIG WAY, 10% off is not enough anymore, give a meaningful 30% to 50% of your profit every time they refer you with a new customer, in actuality your customers are increasing your future business.
