I thank my clients by really listening to them at a deep level, which seems to be a lost art nowadays. They usually respond letting me know they feel heard. Starting with a small customer base with whom you try out all your procedures to gain familiarity with the flow of your business and to iron out any wrinkles is probably best. This includes writing and refining all the forms which pertain to delivering your service; working out your three-minute elevator speech and your 10-minute explanation of what exactly you do and what your specialties are. You need to set up your front office to make the waiting area comfortable for clients, and you need to develop a comforting presence when you answer the phone. Any call could be a potential client. The key is not only to know your work from the inside-out but also to know how to manage your office. You can get a lot of help from the Small Business Administration (SBA) in your area and also from networking with leaders of similar businesses through the local Chamber of Commerce. Always carry your business cards with you, because you never know when you will meet someone who could use your services or products!

Being in a confined space with a person or persons to work on their wellness and mental health issues and then needing to thoroughly disinfect the space before another another clients in is NOT a good idea! I know Americans are independent and not used to following state or federal guidelines, but the Covid pandemic has been handled so poorly that the American experience is worse than most countries. We need to value human life and "hunker down" and wear masks and follow all guidelines!

Examples of excellent relaxation techniques include (1) breathing techniques to slow down both inhalation and especially exhalation using imagery or sound; (2) progressive relaxation; (3) meditation, guided or using a mantra or breath. Examples of doing something constructive include getting involved or re-involved in a hobby; reaching out to others via email or phone; exercising while maintaining social distance. Walking is an excellent exercise which can also help control blood pressure!

Sometimes you might assume that the referral source frequently uses a specific counseling modality, when in fact they no longer do or when it is no longer their specialty.
