I am a lawyer and the "why" for me is that I want to help everyday people negotiate their legal problems in a way that is unintimidating so that this justice system that we have in Canada, and which I think is awesome, can feel available and transparent and accessible to anyone who needs it.
As an aside, there is a great book called "Find Your Why" by Simon Sinek. It is good reading on the subject of what inspires you.

I pay for my lawyers' cell phones. They are all connected to the office. They all check for email and voice mail messages in that fashion - but we have little that is truly an emergency and I caution my lawyers that clients will become complacent about contacting them on holidays and weekends...

They all check for email and voice mail messages in that fashion - but we have little that is truly an emergency and I caution my lawyers that clients will become complacent about contacting them on holidays and weekends if, before we respond (or not), we do not make a determination as to whether this is truly an emergency (or not).
We continue to find that referrals and personal relationships are our best resource. Having said that, we work hard at keeping our name out there through community involvement - sponsorships, belonging to our local Chamber of Commerce, volunteering, being on local Boards. It is hard to quantify...

We continue to find that referrals and personal relationships are our best resource. Having said that, we work hard at keeping our name out there through community involvement - sponsorships, belonging to our local Chamber of Commerce, volunteering, being on local Boards. It is hard to quantify the effect of these things but we hope and believe that when people have a choice that they choose us because they recognize our name. And, we get to give back to our community which is important to us in and of itself.

The majority of our new clients come from referrals from satisfied clients. Doing effective, efficient work for your clients is, in my opinion, the most effective and cost efficient way to grow your business. I have also learned to ask my clients lots of questions about their business and their lives - it is amazing how often that interest blossoms into more work from them or referrals coming from them.
