Listening is the key in my experience to good customer service and client relations. The customer needs to feel truly listened to - not patronized and placated. Companies are often very uncomfortable admitting to a mistake as they see litigious behavior around every corner. But apologizing for the person's experience and communicating that you want to resolve it in a way that brings satisfaction goes a long way.
