This may mean customizing a package for them or mixing your offerings in a new way that best meets their needs. By listening to their interests and trying to be responsive you start to build a relationship with your customer and have more than just a transaction with them. This can be difficult if you have a tangible product instead of a service, but even listening to your customers' needs and addressing them as best you can will exceed their expectations without compromising on price and build repeat business.

A tangible ROI on revenues the bottom line of the business is nice, but not always so easy to show as a direct cause and effect. If I can't show a direct financial benefit, I take the approach that my services will make the management team better and give them the ability to take on more responsibility. That frees the owner or executive up from supervising daily tasks to spend time on the more strategic thought they should be focused on to grow the business. Also, don't get wrapped up in making any one particular sale or making it on a quick timeline. Not everyone is the right client for you and even if they are, they may not be ready to buy today. Keep networking, building relationships and prospecting. If you keep looking for opportunities, it becomes less critical to make the sale on each one.

(more) Some great questions that I've been asked and that I've also asked: 1) Tell me about an initiative that you spearheaded and how you went about accomplishing it. In this question, I'm looking to find out if they are a self-starter who will propose a solution when they see a problem, assess the situation and come up with a plan to move forward, and can build a coalition around them to gain support for their idea, as well as if they can follow through on their ideas. 2)  Tell me about a time you faced adversity and how you dealt with it. Here I'm trying to see if they dig in and look for a solution when things get hard, or if they give up. Also, a good way to see if they know when to ask for help from others. 3) What is the most important lesson you've learned about teamwork? (or leadership if the interview is for a leadership position) This gives us an idea about their leadership style and the ways they will interact with others and if they are a good fit for the team.

As a business owner I use multiple marketing channels to find prospects that I then build relationships that can result in business for my company. I go to networking events, follow up on referrals and use LinkedIn to reach out to people who I can start a professional relationship with. Sometimes that relationship develops into a client, sometimes a partner, sometimes a good business contact. Focus on building relationships in the community and you will find the clients who you can best serve.
