(more) Require a Certificate of Insurance from the Contractor, with you listed as an Additional Insured (Certificate Holder). Most contractors will have what is called a Blanket Additional Insured endorsement, which will automatically include you as an Additional Insured. The certificate should list what they carry for General Liability, a Waiver of Subrogation included, Workers' Compensation, Commercial Auto & Commercial Umbrella. This is important to protect you and your business.  General Liability - Limit of $1M - this will protect you if anyone is injured or property is damaged.  Workers Compensation/Employers Liability - Limit of $500K - This will protect you if a contracted employee is injured on the job.  Commercial Auto - Limit of at least $300K - depending on the size of the contractors business, larger contractors will carry $500K to $1M.   Commercial Umbrella - Limit of $1M - this will be additional coverage for all 3 if those limits are exhausted.  The certificate will show who the insurance carrier is, the agency name/agent name, policy numbers & effective date of policy. Verify with the insurance agency that coverage is currently in place. Make sure you have the certificate in hand and it has been verified before the job is started.  Good Luck!

Social Media is the next best thing, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get your name/business out there. Taking it a step further, make sure your brand is updated, without changing the core of your message. Something as simple as updating your business colors or the font in your name. Our agency also works off of 3 Core Values. We have centered our business around those values and work from there. From the people we hire, to the way we run the business, to our day to day operations, to how we give back to the community, it all stems from our core values. Make those values known, show why people should trust you with their business. Making those values a part of your brand will catch the public's eye. Get involved and give back to the community. Be a part of something greater and show that you care about your city. It all comes back around. This has worked for our agency since 1930.

I think if there is something that reaches your heart, you find a way to give back. Once you find your passion or passions, reach out to those groups in your area. They will never turn down someone who wants to be a part of their organization. Once you commit, a whole other world opens up. You as a person, start to change and grow. You realize how very fortunate you are and you end up meeting some amazing incredible people.

We concentrate on relationships where our wide range of services are utilized. It isn't always about bringing on a new client. It can be about helping another business realize the scope of their potential with our experience, knowledge, advice and referrals.  It can be about referring another business to them or vice versa. We have and do go to great lengths to help a business, new or experienced, set up programs, regulations, risk management, HR, etc. that are better suited for their needs and never secure them as a client. However, we have provided an opportunity for a future client and with that relationship, we receive referrals from them for others. By helping the business grow, our community grows and we benefit as a whole.

Our agency loves to bring a business in and help them from the ground up in all aspects, not just insurance. We are risk managers, but we have contact with so many other different types of businesses that we are in a unique position to help them retain and gain new clientele. We end up referring a majority of our clients to other businesses that we know and trust. It is rewarding to not only help our clients grow, but to share our knowledge and experience with others. When your main goal isn't growing your own business, but to help the community, other businesses, and our fellow networking cohorts, we end up gaining new insight, new clients and new friends. It all goes a long way.

(more) I apologize for not responding sooner! I believe the answer to your first question would change depending on the carrier. However, I would say that the common answer is, yes it would be considered a misstatement and the death benefit would be adjusted accordingly, either at time of death or time of gender change. For your second question, again, this would verify depending on the carrier. I would advise the insured to reach out to their agent. If they do not have an agent, I would contact the carrier directly. In my experience the carriers have requested date of change and proof of change. At the time of confirmation they would adjust the rates accordingly and request additional premium or return premium. Thank you for your questions! Allison
