Started out as a Midas franchisee and operated successfully for 20 years. In 2012, we reopened as The Auto Guys in our current location.

My suggestion is to enlist the services of a good business coach that will guide you on the best path to success and keep you on that path. Understand the market you are in especially your competition. The more you understand your market, the faster you can make changes to keep on top of it. Above all make your business distinctive and different from your competition.
I have been on several Zoom meetings with fellow Chamber of Commerce members discussing Covid19 related issues. St. Thomas business owners are a close knit group who share their ideas on how to come out of this pandemic.

In the auto service and repair sector things are changing rapidly. With the improvement in how vehicles are being built, they are not breaking down as much so vehicle traffic is declining in the repair sector but increasing in the maintenance sector. When vehicles break down the repairs are more costly forcing customers to shop around for the best price. Unfortunately this can not work in their favor. If a service is cheaper, it is for a reason. Business is far more competitive and cut throat lately. People are buying their parts online and being sold counterfeit parts. This is more prominent with younger generations. Shop owners must work harder to attract and retain the business than ever before. The costs of operating a professional auto shop are much higher if you want to be in the upper segment of successful shops. In my opinion there will be fewer independent shops around able to service and repair these high tech vehicles in the near future.
When you refer someone it is a reflection of you. Be absolutely sure of your referral. It should be based on personal experiences. It wouldn't hurt to do a follow up to see how their experience was.

If you want to be successful then changes must happen. Technology is where the business is going. Young employees have different focuses so if you want to attract and keep them there is a lot more to do than give them the latest tools. Make your work environment attractive to them.

All skilled trades are suffering. The guidance councilors and teachers need to be made aware of this training path for skilled trades. This training path needs to be started as soon as possible so the students can take the appropriate classes and get into good co-op training sessions. You never...

All skilled trades are suffering. The guidance councilors and teachers need to be made aware of this training path for skilled trades. This training path needs to be started as soon as possible so the students can take the appropriate classes and get into good co-op training sessions. You never know where a potential candidate may come from so keep your eyes and ears open. Establish relationships with the local schools and attend their job fairs to get your business known to potential candidates. We have hired several students from the co-op program. You can also seek out government assistance for hiring youth to get additional training for them. Another source is international students. We currently have one and I must say he has an excellent work ethic and will be a devoted employee. They appreciate a good working environment and are eager to to succeed.
Knowing when to step away from certain parts of the business and hire people to do those jobs better than me.
