It is about building relationships with other business owners that you can refer your customer/ client to in areas you do not work in. It is also about having conversations with other business owners to see who works with similar clients/ customers that you can possibly  exchange referrals. To truly be a good networker you need to have the give first mind set. If you do it will come back to you many times over.

If you gain a client/ customer through networking that is great but not what networking is all about. You are there to learn about other people's businesses and see how you can help them. Do not make it about you that is a turn off to others at networking events. I lead several networking groups in the past and been to hundreds of networking events. I can tell you from experience if all you are trying to do is sell your product you are not going to get much out of networking.

I will say I am a QuickBooks person, but that is not the only accounting software out there and a lot depends on the accounting software that you use.

Usually, it is the ones that want you to do a lot of work for free and you have to hold the line; otherwise, you give away all you do for free. I am usually very flexible with my clients as I do not mind helping out from time to time and doing a bit extra always been that way. Some clients keep wanting more and more; as I said there is a time you have to draw a line. I always include a scope of the engagement in my engagement letter.  I do my best to respond to these reviews in a positive manner using them as a learning experience.

If someone came to me and was using a different software then I would refer them to someone who has expertise in that software.  I would rather be an expert in one accounting software when QuickBooks offers so many different versions of their software. I had some come to me the other day that was using Yardi software for their bookkeeping. Since I am not familiar with the software; I turned down the potential client. Unfortunately, I do not know anyone familiar with the software so could not refer them to someone.  Another reason I might refer someone to a competitor would depend on the industry that the potential client might be in.  We work well with a number of different industries construction being one of those. However, I might refer someone in the retail industry or e-commerce to someone else as the new sales tax laws would make the process much more in-depth and require the use of add-on software for tracking sales tax in multiple locations so the costs to the client would go up.

Also, they are concerned about the security of their information. Another issue I have run into is what if I need to write a check right now? You can handwrite a check and let the bookkeeper know the number to get it recorded or you can do what most business owners do today put it on your business charge card and earn rewards. Keep two thing in mind when outsourcing your bookkeeping one experience of the bookkeeper and the fact you will save money over having to pay  an employee.  There are a lot of bookkeepers out there make sure you have one you can communicate with and who is knowledgeable in not only bookkeeping but all the applications and software that can be added on as needed. Look for certifications. However, with the movement toward virtual bookkeeping services this is no longer an issue as most bookkeeping companies will have QuickBooks desktop or use QuickBooks Online software both being total secure with  the same encryption as you will find on your bank account. I use QuickBooks as an example as that is the software I know best and have used for years. However, there are many bookkeeping software packages and applications available out there. However, you need to be careful when choosing a bookkeeping software and applications to make sure it will expand with your business as it grows.

It is really important to do your due diligence when purchasing an exiting business I still recommend all of the above and advise you to also obtain the services of a good CPA in order to audit financial statements of an existing business. If a business is hesitant about offering you financial statements over several years then I believe they have something to hide and I would walk away from the deal.

Attorneys usually charge a retainer up front before providing services and a lot of businesses require a deposit before doing business. One of the factors is the type of service or product you provide as to when you an collect from your customers/ clients. Every business is different and if you charge an hourly rate then like an attorney you can ask for a retainer of so many hours before you begin working that automatically replenishes as hours are used.
