(more) Any professional business advice during this unprecedented event is helpful.  Most entrepreneurs will already have paid much attention to all the financial support offerings, for businesses, of their Federal Gov and their Provincial or State governments and to them and staff personally.  We are all in the same boat with this.   I feel the need to remind everyone that this type of event can occur at anytime in the life of your business and it doesn't necessarily have to be a life crisis event.   My best advice is to build comprehensive contingency plans using what you learn from this event, and there is much to learn from this.  Put mechanisms in place, now, utilizing the knowledge you gain in your communication with the businesses and financial institutions, that you work with, on how to maneuver payments, that is cost effective for everyone.  It will be very beneficial in moving the economy and your businesses forward, when we all get back to "normal", at a quicker pace.   We are getting updates on a daily basis, here in BC and across Canada, on the predicted length and advancement of this pandemic.  Pay attention to the info, as it is constantly changing as the government gets new info from the front lines daily.  Suggest you build a new management model for yourself and staff, today.  To put this in a better prospective, suggest thinking of this, initiative, as your own private insurance policy for your business.  Use the creativity that you used to build your business in the beginning and trust yourself!    Anyone can suggest what is best, but only you and your financial team (use them) know your business.   Please note: Those contingency plans and new management model will protect your business now and in future if and when some negative event happens again.    Suggest reviewing and subsequently updating every six months to ensure the plans and the model still "fit" in this fast changing world we inhabit.   Stay safe everyone!!

(more) Financial Statements define the "health" of your company.  They can give you a wealth of information for marketing, hiring, new revenue streams, investing and the list goes on.  Understanding them allows the Small Business owner major advantages in their  industry.  In today's industry environment there are no "standards" for the business owner who is driven to make their business profitable, enabling growth and ultimately fulfill all their dreams.  They need to be innovators and influencers instead of sticking to the “industry standards”.  Understanding the health of your own business motivates most. Simply put, the Balance Sheet is your business' history and current business value position if you were to liquidate all your assets minus your liabilities equals your equity. The definition of equity is: if someone owns a car worth $15,000, but owes $5,000 on a loan against that car, the car represents $10,000 of equity. Equity can be negative if liabilities are greater than the assets in your company. Please note: all asset/liability accounts need to be reconciled for accuracy in your financial records.  This is where the bank statements and credit card statements come into play.   Bank statements and credit card statements only tell part of your business story. Unfortunately, a lot of financial statements have been created based solely on the bank statements and credit card statements which leaves them incomplete. The Income Statement is your current gauge for the here and now. It shows what you have billed your clients/customers versus what you have spent in your business right now, this month and this year. It will only be as accurate as the information you have provided your professional bookkeeper.  All of the information on this report gets added to your Balance Sheet, daily, monthly and eventually yearly.  It can be as detailed as you the owner would like. Your professional bookkeeper should have the capability to go over the essentials of your financial statements with you on a monthly basis.  I would highly recommend that you do this exercise.

(more) As any small business owner, you really need to ensure your bookkeeping is complete and accurate with correct recording of income, bank, credit card reconciliation, all tax and payroll remittances current.  This allows proper financial statements to be produced and reviewed monthly.  This is the easiest process for small business owners to grasp.  The income statement is the key to knowledge on the monthly income vs spending.  Your professional bookkeeper is also able to provide you with a comparative Income Statements so you can view the fluctuation in expenditures.  Once you have a grasp on understanding your financials then you are better equipped to develop strategies, budgets and cash flow reports, moving forward, for your business.

My business partner (CPA) left a year and a half ago and I was very concerned as to how I was going to manage without a replacement.  Then I found this new network and my business is starting to grow again. The ROI on the cost of my membership has been paid for and then some. Why did I say all of that, to solidify the "value" of being a member of a professional network or association that works with and for you.

In my humble opinion, this word has also morphed into an excuse for "not having things done". :) I am guilty, I admit, of using this word for that purpose, a few times over the course of my working career and anyone who can honestly say they have not.......please share. Success, on the other hand, has many meanings and being "busy" is not one of them.

Word of mouth still works wonders, however, the internet is something I have come to rely on for simple forms personal and business, legal forms (that do not require a lawyer), software that does the work you used do manually.....that is a big one......staying connected is the big one for me since my family is spread across the country.....and coming back to customers......they can review before meeting to buy........my personal favourite.
