Since the original June 15 deadline wasn't moved for self-employed, 95% were done by the original deadline. Businesses that were sending their information regularly during the year saw the advantages this year with the government loans, etc.  Businesses should at all times have their paperwork send to their accountants on regular basis. You never know how busy your accountant is and it is usually first come first served basis. All these new government loans etc didn't help with our workload. We are busier then ever before.

Balance sheet will give you a review of the assets and liabilities of the business, Income statement (Profit/Loss statement) will show you total income and expense amounts for the year which both of these statements will get the information to create the yearly numbers from the company's bank, credit card, petty cash, invoices, etc. You might want to get a professional help to create these statements for you on regular basis to keep track of your financial situation and make sure all is in order for your business.

I can recommend keeping an excel sheet but it might take more time then anticipated to go through all your transactions. These applications do provide reporting for you to see monthly totals and also have budgeting tools. These tools do help your accountant at year end as well and its a great way of keeping receipts electronically as we know they won't be readable in few years. As a business owner, I think your time should be spent on your business, not doing accounting.
