Depends on the type of business. Lodging we need to reach people farther away. So networking locally does not bring many clients.

It may be helpful to offer hosting such events, especially small ones, at your location. This alone may bring referrals to you. Once they have visited your location and meet you, referrals may happen. Become known in your local community as someone who is willing to help. It is all about being willing to "Give" before you expect to "Receive".
