We have been successful in recruiting board members from our membership ranks.  We look for individuals who are engaged, who have the types of experience we need and who are willing to work hard.  We have also recently acquired three board members who were recommended by other members.  We find... (more) We have been successful in recruiting board members from our membership ranks.  We look for individuals who are engaged, who have the types of experience we need and who are willing to work hard.  We have also recently acquired three board members who were recommended by other members.  We find it more valuable to recruit from within our ranks and our social and business networks.  Those individuals are more likely to be familiar with our mission and willing to commit to it.

We raise funds many different ways.  From membership fees, donation jars at events (passing the hat), applying for grants, holding specific fundraising events, online fundraising, annual giving drives, sales of merchandise, tuition for workshops and classes.  We try to explore every possibility... Incorporation, 4. Obtain 501(c)(3)... (more) Start with a MIssion Statement.  What, exactly, are you hoping to accomplish with your organization?  What need in the community are you fulfilling?  Here are some specific steps that you could take:  1.  Mission Statement. 2 Board of Directors and By-Laws 3. Incorporation, 4. Obtain 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.  After that it is helpful to have a clear Strategic Plan and Business Plan.  There are many, many resources out there for non-profits so you could consider finding someone already working in the non-profit world who can help you find those resources.

We have had success looking within our membership for the people who consistently volunteer their time and talent.  We recruit from those people and the people they know to find talented individuals.  It has helped us to have a document that specifically outlines Board responsibilities and... (more) We have had success looking within our membership for the people who consistently volunteer their time and talent.  We recruit from those people and the people they know to find talented individuals.  It has helped us to have a document that specifically outlines Board responsibilities and expectations.  We don't want board members in name only.  We are all volunteer so we need a Board that is active and willing to do the work.  You may consider creating a list of churches around your area and finding out who among your constituents has a relationship with them.
