(more) Practically all of my referrals are the result of hard work promoting the Bruce Bennett Nissan (BBN) dealership and the customer experience I provide through social media campaigns, networking, my Certification by DealerRater.com -- the reputational website for the automotive industry -- and word-of-mouth from my own very satisfied clients!! I also take every opportunity to remind everyone that we have a Referral Rewards Program: BBN will send you a $100 check if you refer someone who purchases a new or used vehicle AND mentions your name at signing. There's no limit to how many referrals someone can send our way. Yet the most unique opportunity in my almost four years at BBN occurred within the last three weeks. A prospect from Seattle, WA, called me. He's looking for a cargo van to support his communications company business. Unhappy with the inventory available throughout the Northwest Region (only white vans), he called Nissan's national helpline. The helpline, in turn, referred him to BBN because it knew we had several cargo vans in Arctic Blue, Brilliant Silver, Black and Cayenne Red. This prospect and I are now having ongoing conversations about local businesses (airports, hotels and taxi services) so he can plan his trip to pick up his new van and drive home to Seattle!!

Study after study shows that more than 70% of customers go online to evaluate pricing and the reputation of automobile dealerships before deciding where to take their business. Moreover, nearly 80% of customers reach out to their friends on social media for referrals to dealerships. So that's where Bruce Bennett Nissan will focus its marketing . . . and I will continue to do all that I can to stay Certified on DealerRater.com and to have a presence on LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter and Instagram as the only salesperson who delivers the "Bruce Bennett Nissan/DR-G 'thumbs up' customer experience."

They simply need to be consistent. What does change, however, are all of the many non-holiday promotions. These promotions are coordinated with the many dealer and customer incentives launched by Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation. And those can happen at any time during any month. So as soon as we know that new incentives exist, we promote them. The watchword to prospects and return customers -- ALWAYS keep your eyes on our website, your e-mail and your mailbox!!

During that time, the dealership has established a reputation for treating customers like family . . . with dignity and respect. Small wonder, then, that BBN has also established itself as a "destination dealership," meaning that prospects, customers and repeat customers will travel long distances to do business with us. There are many facets in our customer experience that keeps people coming back time and time again. First and foremost is that we LISTEN. We listen to make sure we understand all customer requirements. We also EMPATHIZE with customers. We approach the interaction not as a "deal," but as an opportunity to help by providing an automotive solution to a specific need. Finally, we GO THE EXTRA YARD for customers. Sometimes this means making a home delivery or adorning a vehicle with a big bow so the customer can take a photograph in a gifting situation. It all adds up to making BBN the kind of dealership you won't soon forget.

(more) By nature, the automotive sector has a longer business cycle than monthly. Our cycles are three years for leases and typically four, five and six years for financing. What remains a consistent hallmark of the Bruce Bennett Nissan brand and customer experience is that we offer "added-value" in all cycles. Our added-value takes several forms. In our Service Department, for example, we offer a very pleasant and accommodating environment with morning snacks, a TV lounge, a Quiet Room and three desk areas with WiFi access to the internet for customers who are waiting for their vehicles to be serviced. For those customers who can't wait, we offer free loaner vehicles. For customers who may need transportation beyond their specific vehicles -- say for a family reunion -- we also rent cars with unlimited mileage and daily or weekly rates even more competitive than standard rental agencies like Hertz, Avis, Budget and Enterprise. For lease and finance customers, we offer a Referral Rewards Program that pays them a cash bonus based on how many new customers they send to us. We also have special incentives for lease customers that allow them to exit their leases early and move into a new Nissan sooner than expected. For finance customers, we leverage our relationships with multiple lending institutions to find them the most competitive Annual Percentage Rate (APR) we can. This is an ongoing added-value because after a year or two at a certain APR, we often help customers re-finance to a lower APR. In short, the added-value at Bruce Bennett Nissan is what distinguishes this dealership from so many others . . . and why BBN has been a preferred destination for 30 years!

Agree wholeheartedly with Ed from ProspectorWorks, Inc. You need a "blanket coverage" approach: every communication from you must include your website address. Sounds simple, but implementing it from A to Z may be more challenging than you think. I'm sure you're up to the challenge. Best of luck. Second, make sure to develop a customer experience strategy that's within your capability to both afford and deliver. It could be something as simple as providing breakfast items, e.g., coffee and donuts, in your waiting area for customers. Or perhaps a WiFi connection and a few desks so customers can work while they wait for their repairs to be finished. And all of this starts with a warm welcome greeting! Make sure to radiate positivity and a customer-first attitude from the start!! Follow-up is also critically important. Make sure you reach out to your customers within 48-hours to find out if all is OK. If not, then be prepared to ask them to come back to the shop for additional service, maybe even at cost since the first time didn't work. Customer is #1 and you have to show it!!

In my mind, being innovative doesn't necessarily have anything to do with old work ethics. I prefer to think that being innovative means working intelligently in a determined and energetic manner. Beyond this, I'd start by raising your standards for new employees. The car business is notorious for employing people with minimal educations, e.g., high school diploma. The long and short of it is that you get what you ask for. Raise your standards, provide the information, tools and learning environment that employees need to be successful and then see what transpires. I'm confident you'll see a very positive difference -- a transformation -- that will benefit all. I once worked for the CEO of a very large company known in its early years for manufacturing copiers. He was once asked to define his role. He said it was to "provide the tools and information people need to be successful . . . and then get out of the way."

(more) Despite a business world that changes every single day, the auto industry has lagged in adopting new best-practice policies and procedures. What other industry promotes multiple pricing in the same ad? The first price is meant to catch the consumer's eye, though the asterisk accompanying that price is hard to see. Follow the asterisk and read the fine print . . . then you finally get the REAL price. What a silly game! Most people appreciate an honest, open and forthright approach, e.g., Don't "bait and switch" me. Show me the real, final, out-the-door price of your product and let me decide if I can afford it or not. I'll surely let you know and respect you for being transparent with me. That's the approach I take will all my customers and the reason why I work at Bruce Bennett Nissan in Wilton, CT. I had a FANTASTIC experience as a CUSTOMER three years ago during a period of unemployment. Six months later, I decided to try something completely different from what I had been doing and joined BBN as a sales consultant. It's been a great fit for both parties and has allowed me to move forward in a way that treats customers the way I would want to be treated . . . with dignity and respect!! See how my customers are describing their interactions with me at: https://www.dealerrater.com/sa... If you want a customer experience that's always "thumbs up," call me at 203-544-8371, ext. 207.
