Everyone's terminology is a bit different, so sometimes the more detail you put out there just confuses people and can be made clear by simply watching one of our videos.  I think this pertains to all of you as well, no matter what you're offering. In-person consultations are always most effective, but even then you may miss something or not be on your "A" game. Showing a short promo video then discussing options in detail afterwards is always helpful. Also, what about all the potential business that you're not speaking with on the phone and getting coffee with? It's why video and story-driven marketing are becoming the new norm. People make emotional decisions, so the more genuine and emotionally striking the content is, the better (short of coming off sappy).  Check out our portfolio at www.vimeo.com/votarymedia to see some examples of what I mean. It's all about being authentic, starting with WHY you do what you do, and just showing up as a positive presence.  mike@votarymedia.com www.votarymedia.com 508 783 5794

It's definitely a combination of things, and keeping things personable, investing in people, and naturally having solid/fair services simultaneously. As a filmmaker, I'm interested in real human stories, and helping people/brands genuinely connect with the right people. It's all about keeping things natural and authentic day-to-day with people, but reinforcing that in your marketing as well; not just focusing on what you do/how you do it/but WHY you do it. But with that said, we've all seen a ton of interesting art hanging in cafes and restaurants. Most dentist offices, chiropractic/massage, etc. seem to want to plan out their decor while painting the rooms initially. I honestly don't know - but I've always thought about taking really epic long exposure shots of places at night, particularly cool looking restaurants, and making prints to try to sell to that spot. I feel like they would have to go for it, but I've never actually done it, haha. If you try that let me know if it worked.

So as a film director/producer at Votary Media, obviously I'm bias - but I do think high quality marketing films are the most effective way in conveying that message to your audience. It's an opportunity to say exactly what you want to say quickly and authentically, and then implement that message on all modern marketing platforms including your website, social media, all that jazz.

Then create your own website with a pre-made template and put your photos in and colors/logo and boom. Saved thousands. For hair and makeup, which I'm noticing is what everyone on this thread is - I think it depends on your niche, but I'm guessing there are both wordpress and squarespace templates that have your back. It's really just about taking the time to make it look really beautiful and responsive and portray your company as accurately as possible. As well as mobile friendly, photo-centric, fast loading, blah blah blah. Votary Media is a marketing film company, but we used to focus on website design as well, and ironically still have a web project in the pipeline every month even though we've transitioned to film and don't advertise that we do web at all anymore - it's just from referrals. The companies that still need professionals to work on their site are usually needing ecommerce, and have too many custom desires for their site to just grab a template on wix or squarespace. Plus most of them just don't want to worry about it, because regardless of what you're building, and no matter how simple - it still takes a good chunk of time. So use squarespace or wordpress, or even wix (easy but limited and not quite as nice) but only if you know you're in an industry that is easily defined and can find a template that suits you. If you're a leather boot company that uses profits to build homes for homeless people, and also make sugar free soda knock-offs and digital to analog audio convertors, just hire a professional for your website.

Before I religiously used a CRM, I connected with less people, was less consistent, thus made less sales, and felt more scattered. It could be my personality, which is artist-type-go-with-the-flow-sort-of , but I like seeing all my prospects and warm leads and knowing who to follow up with and whatnot - plus you get a little serotonin boost when you get to move a company from a "proposal sent" column to "closed won". Boom. Good feels.

In my experience the networking events are great for making an obscene amount of connections that can become potential sales, and some do. But doing actual "selling" at the events is, like people below have already stated, a bit of a faux pas. So no - I think a sales person can't sell... Almost no other investment is as effective in growing and connecting than donating services/time in your community. With that said, I think it's important to do it for the right reasons - because you see a genuine need that you can and want to help with and don't expect anything in return.... What exactly are you showing people? You have all the right platforms but what exactly will be advertised? A printed trifold helps, a well designed online ad maybe. I'm obviously bias because I work with a film production company, but it's almost undeniable how effective using high quality video in marketing is nowadays. Yeah, I'm another guy promoting what I do in my answer. But Votary Media (www.votarymedia.com) has worked in digital marketing, web design, print ads, graphics, SEO, and video for over ten years, and in the last 4 years have transitioned to marketing film only. Yeah - it's the most fun out of all of those and we're all filmmakers anyway, but it's also what we've seen the highest ROI from for ourselves and our clients.
