Builders and contractors - do you charge for the initial site consultation?

Quotes and consulting should have a charge associated with it ,we charge for our design services. It doesn't go well with everyone but its very costly for our company to spend 4 -12 hours and have a client use our company for reference for other businesses to bid against.

I agree with you. I spend numerous hours or even days preparing estimates and I find potential clients throw them in the trash if I am not the low bidder. If I am low bidder, I likely don't want the job.
