Granted, some are worse at this than others, but c’mon, why go to a networking meeting if not to promote your business? This doesn’t bother me at all. When talking with another business owner, my goal is  to figure out how to help them sell their services (aka who can I refer, what groups do I know that are a good fit, etc?). I need to know why they are different/better to be helpful, to make meaningful introductions at the event, and to remember them in the future. If they ask me about my business, I’m happy to share our benefits, too.

Don’t overlook traditional marketing such as print & direct mail. Cheaper doesn’t necessarily equate to more effective. A recent study showed B2B direct mail yielded 35x the response rate of e-mail marketing to the same audience. Effective storytelling also engages and educates prospects. I got a great expandable cooler (large, round, folded flat and had a lid). It had handles and was the perfect thing to take to a party. I would buy them for my business to give at a picnic or another client appreciation event. Super useful and nice, large imprint area, and did not take a ton of storage space.

Make sure they know you exist and do your best to be in front of them during the times they need your product/service. Attend networking events and participate in local business groups to meet with business owners and decision makers. Referrals are also an excellent source of opportunity. Picking up the phone and making calls can be efficient if you approach people respectfully. When you get an opportunity, be on top of it - don't delay sending a quote or a follow up e-mail. If they aren't ready to buy but mention a future project, keep details about their project and buying cycle in a CRM. Get in touch well in advance an offer assistance to stay ahead of your competition. Good luck!
