BNI- works like a charm. I'm a commercial Insurance agency owner so that system has worked well to gain new business and networking partners. It depends on what industry you're in though frankly. BNI isn't the right model for everyone.

Networking at BNI works for me but again those categories are typically taken since they are so successful so I would go to YCEA events, BuyLocal events, join those non-exclusive clubs and be visible.

Unless your kid is MADE, DESTINED to work in a specific field that requires a college degree, skip it. send them out to work for a couple years, let someone else train them in corporate world, and then use that money to invest in their business.

I started my insurance agency 12 years ago, almost 13 already. I started it because I was outgrowing the firm I was in, owned my book by contract and had done my homework with my accountant and attorney to do it correctly. I was splitting my commission with that agency and it was becoming absurd to keep paying that much money for a 10x10 office and a lot of grief. I needed either dedicated staff to keep growing or to decide not to grow.
Failure was not an option. Never let that word haunt you. It's just a fear provoking term that does no one any good. Every minute you spend on fear wastes twice as much in profit. Dismiss it completely. Fear and worry are useless; setting a plan for success and solutions to overcome challenges should be your focus.
