How We Got Started
Photography is my passion and life's work. Feel in love with the craft in 1979 and followed up with a 20-year career as a USAF Photojournalist. I meet my wife, Terri, during a class I lead in Yukon, OK and we have been partners in Life, Love, and Photography ever since.

Shannon,
This is a very common question in any business and the answer isn't an easy one. Marketing is a gamble - no one for guarantee your ROI for any setup and the only way to know if a system will work for you, will be to implement and track results.
With that said, marketing isn't a single process but involves many different avenues to get your message in front of the right people. So in this case, everyone is right about their approach but you will need quantify the results needed for your business and decide on the best avenues to invest your marketing dollars.
As a commercial photographer, I find that direct contact with a company proves the best investment of my time normally after researching websites for related products of items photographed. For example, I'm shot images for a flooring company and researched other businesses involved in the construction project to email them directly with my portfolio with a phone call follow-up.
Here is a link to my podcast and there is some useful episodes on marketing for photographers. Look at the interviews with Jason Jones from Dallas.
