Prior to launching Business Owners Trade Alliance and enrolling Member #1 in 2010, Maria Wirth owned a Celtic museum reproduction company for over a decade. As an artisan, she regularly traded with fellow vendors at festivals—she often says she “bartered her little heart out.” She later became a real estate investor, securing and wholesaling properties for investors.
Scott Martz, BOTA’s CEO, was a top-performing sales leader for a multinational consulting firm and previously a food service executive. Through his work with hundreds of business owners, he gained deep insight into both the opportunities and challenges they face.
Together, they recognized a powerful truth: businesses often have untapped capacity—unused time, excess inventory, and open availability. Organized barter transforms those idle resources into real purchasing power, making it a smart, strategic tool in any economy, whether thriving or uncertain.
