About Us

My name is Charles “Chuck” Gilliam. I am an artist currently living in American Fork, Utah, having moved to Utah from Texas. Born into a military family has offered me an opportunity to travel and see much of this country. These travels afforded me a great source of materials on which I have based my illustrative works. Having three children of my own, has only added to my resources for painting. Plus, many years of working as a professional illustrator and graphic designer, I have found himself in a position of determining images to tell a story.
Most of my work is western based with paintings of cowboys and cowgirls, horses and other animals found in the West. What sets my work apart from others is that my main concentration is using color pencil as my painting medium. My hope is that each painting I do helps to bring the viewer’s own story to life – as they look at my work, they write their own story.
• Drawing • Painting • Designing • Writing • Teaching
All of these and more make up my life. Moving forward with my work, expanding my world; looking for new ideas for paintings or writings. Inspiration and creativity drive me on.
INSPIRATION
Inspiration comes from searching and pondering. How can I use what I see to create a painting or to tell a story? The insight that comes opens up a whole realm of possibilities.
CREATIVITY
Constantly searching for inspiration in the West. Always looking for a story to tell in words and in paintings. Such is the goal!
SHARING
Always looking for ways to share my art, whether it is through art shows or artist’s gatherings. Sharing is one great way to learn.

For me, the opening up of live art shows and festivals will definitely be a plus. The opportunity to share my art and then be able to sell it to individuals who would be glad to hang it on their home wall is what I hope to have happen in 2021. I reported directly to the commanding generals for the Tactical Air Command and because of my assignment I had a Top Secret clearance And also, because of my duties, they lead me to a career that lasted 40 years and gave me a course of action through to today. And because of that time in the service, I have put together an art show at the Balcony Gallery, at the American Fork Library, for the month of November. The show is called Honoring Our Veterans. The show will consist of art works by eight artists. Each piece will be dedicated to our veterans, past and present. The show runs from November 3rd to the end of the month with a reception on November 9th, between 5 and 7 PM. All are welcome to come and see the show.

Even if these subjects are not ones that I get the most enjoyment out of painting. I move here from Texas and had a very strong following for my western art. But I have learned that there is not much of a market for western art here in Utah. Therefor I must work to develop another subject in my paintings that will sell to the public. I think the same premise must apply to all businesses. You must develop a product or service that the buying public has interest in, but be aware that over time that product or service can change as the buyers change. Don't lock yourself into one product or service. Allow yourself to be flexible in your genre to meet the needs of your customers and this will allow your business to thrive. That is my experience and opinion, and I hope it helps someone.

Parking is an issue for Main Street businesses. It is difficult for businesses to compete with the big store venues. The city could do a little more to help the Main Street businesses compete.
