I feel I earn the referrals through the hard work I display and the perfection I seek in their account. I keep a mental tab as well, and when a special project outside the normal scope of work comes up I make sure to give them a hefty discount or freebie depending on the details/value of the referral.  In addition, the next time I take them out to lunch, the place we choose just happens to be a bit more expensive.
