I’m glad to have the opportunity to reflect on several positive side effects of these difficult times:
While we have always served our customers with hardworking hands and caring hearts, the pandemic allowed us to see that caring directed back toward us from our customers. During the few months that we initially had to close to comply with state orders, a majority of our customers very generously continued to pay for their normal service in order to ensure the well-being of our employees. We have always performed our work in a manner that protects both our customers and our employees. The pandemic highlighted this as we needed to make almost no changes to deliver to the newly stringent recommendations issued by authorities. It was a great opportunity for our customers and employees both to appreciate the priority we have always placed on safety and well-being. And, it was extremely gratifying to see that through all of this adversity our customers and employees both remained loyal, and we have not only survived, but even thrived in these difficult circumstances. Finally, it has been an opportunity to be reminded of the value in being part of a franchise system. The level of support that our franchisor and fellow franchisees came together to provide was not only extremely helpful, practical, and solutions-oriented, it was incredibly moving, motivating, and inspirational. The pandemic created and continues to provide incredibly difficult challenges. But I hope that others, too, are able to reflect and find their own silver linings.

I have a couple of thoughts to share, but first let’s get the ugly stuff out of the way: I have noticed in your responses to suggestions that you are comparing the ideas shared with what your business WAS, and I think you are probably imagining that this moment in time is temporary, and sooner or later you will get back to “business as usual.” Sorry to be a grouch, but things are going to change permanently. They won’t always look like they do now, but it is unlikely that they will look like they used to. Instead of thinking about a temporary fix, think about how to use your skill set in a whole new way. For example, maybe your business isn’t kid-focused anymore. Maybe it is “bespoke” music services instead. Of course there are loads of other possibilities, too. But I think to see the possibilities you’re going to have to put away your “live performances for kids” hat, and figure out which hat to put on next.
So, let’s say for illustration that you do like the Bespoke Boogie idea. What might a bespoke music service look like?
Well, you already write your own songs. Write them “to order“. Think of all the things we are all trying to celebrate in a new way: birthdays, engagements, retirement, remembering what day of the week it is, scoring a warehouse club-sized pack of TP! 🤣 Help make these celebrations truly special and unique events, not just something less than it would have been pre-COVID. When an 8 or 80 year old can’t have a typical birthday party, what will they do? Call you, of course! You’ll learn some things about them, and then either show up on the front lawn at an appointed time, or create and post online a personalized song written just for the birthday person! All that money people used to spend throwing parties-birthday or otherwise- is now available to spend on you! Celebrations have changed, but the desire to celebrate hasn’t! Meet that need!
You know what hasn’t changed with the pandemic? Radio. Imagine making jingles for businesses that, like yourself, are trying to survive in new ways. You’d be helping them and yourself at the same time. And, sure, there isn’t as much advertising money being spent as there used to be. But that means businesses need their ad $ to have an even greater impact than ever (enter you!) And, very importantly, this revenue stream would not be geographically dependent. You could provide this service for anyone, anywhere! Now I know a lot of musicians who would be disdainful of using their talent in this fashion. But a jingle doesn’t have to sound like it came straight outta 1956. Go for some COVID-style musical commercials. Many people here have suggested providing a service online. Yes! But, that’s really amorphous; it could mean so very many things. Drill this idea down to figure out how to make it happen. For example, there is a website called Outschool.com that many of us parents are relying on heavily to help keep the kids entertained. There are thousands upon thousands of offerings and loads of them sell out. Some of the classes are focused on learning academic skills, some on interesting stuff, like taking a virtual safari, and some are just plain fun, social gatherings! I can easily see you offering different kinds ‘classes’ in a venue like this. Teach how to play an instrument, and how to write a song, and run a weekly music social club. Think of it as Etsy for learning experiences. Everything is done for you....just write up your class descriptions, do a fun 1-2 minute bio video, set your own schedule, and have fun making some $
It’s totally OK if you don’t like these ideas! They’re just examples. I genuinely believe you will be best served by thinking of what is the right step forward instead of thinking that you just need to side-step and come up with a stopgap. You’re obviously creative! You just need to focus that creativity on what’s next for your business. And then take action!
I hope you have fun with the process of figuring out what’s next! And then you can give a TED talk on how the amazing power of creativity conquered Covid!!

Now that the $600/wk CARES act payments have stopped, I have increased my spending on recruitment. Until the $600 stopped there was no point trying to recruit because folks were making more money staying home. But I need employees!! I've been turning away business. Fortunately (for me, as an employer) without the $600, applicants are looking and are serious. Plus, with the work we do and the safety precautions we take, working for us is much more appealing than working for a retailer, restaurant, hotel, assisted living facility, etc. with whom we typically compete for employees. The last month has been the best hiring market I've seen in 20+yrs!

I have used HomeAdvisor as a consumer for several projects, and as a business for several years. I have just ended my business relationship with them. During Coronavirus when we were closed per our governor's orders, HomeAdvisor continued to charge us even though I had called and put our service with them on hold. When we re-opened they wanted us to pay for the months we had been closed, AND pay to be added back to their system as a new client. CRAZY - especially when so many other vendors were offering discounts and leniency on paying bills. Plus, the leads are VERY expensive, and they are NOT qualified leads. When a consumer visits HomeAdvisor they are led through a series of prompts that ends with them requesting an estimate. The process gives the impression that you can just request estimates to your heart's content to satisfy your curiosity. When in fact, in my industry when a consumer hits that final button that's around $60 debited from my bank account.
My experiences using HomeAdvisor as a consumer have been decent, but only because I understand the way it works, only used it when I was ready to choose a service provider, and expected to be inundated with calls from companies hungry to recoup that lead cost investment.
I used to feel really good about Angie's List. They had real integrity and exclusivity in the way they operated and I appreciated doing business with them. But, of course they were bought by HomeAdvisor, so there's no real value there anymore.
Absolutely! We would never charge our customers more than expected without receiving their explicit approval before incurring those charges.

Listening carefully during the estimate conversation. When we understand why a customer is hiring us we are better able to not just meet, but exceed their expectations by providing service that meets their latent needs.
