About Us

The Career Direct® Guidance System was developed out of a need for a comprehensive assessment that would help people better understand their unique gifts and find the career or educational path that best matches their God-given strengths and abilities.

How We Got Started

The founder, Larry Burkett noted that, "During the years I was counseling families on their finances, I frequently observed people in career fields that didn't match their talents and abilities. It concerned me that so many people were not aware of their strengths and, therefore, were not being good stewards of their talents. I began to hope that someone would develop a program that would help people understand their vocational bent and show them how to make the right career decisions. In 1989 I began working on this task."

The assessment is now used all over the world.

I like using www.MomSourceNetwork.com because they have candidates that usually have a degree and are looking for flexible employment. Also, I prefer word-of-mouth - hands down, it's just a better way to hire in my opinion because I get to start with a person who actually knows someone. I've tried to work from a referral fee model in the past but QUICKLY discovered there is usually too much red tape and strings attached, so I quickly moved away from those models as the "norm." I  prefer to get to know a person first and then pull from my vast network of resources and connect people based on personalities, interests, and a myriad of other factors. It's cleaner. People appreciate honest transactions without the hustle and the hassle, and they usually return when they are looking for another connection.

(more) I too have struggled with this balance for many years, and it doesn't help that I'm an introvert either. I allowed business to consume my life for many years to the point my family and friends would wonder if they were ever going to get quality time with me. I have since set many personal and professional boundaries in my life and I'm pretty adamant about keeping them because I have found it is what keeps me safe from burnout. I also schedule EVERYTHING on my Google calendar on my phone and I use various color schemes and email addresses to separate business from personal.  When it comes to scheduling business appointments, I find that rather than trying to x amount of appointments per day, I do what I call "sprint scheduling." I take one day per week to send out invitations to meet for coffee, and then I fill my calendar based on responses. And I don't stress over the ones who don't respond or who say no. One of my favorite networking tips is from Michael Griffiths, Referral Marketing Guru from Sydney, Australia. He states, "Do not expect anything.  When you reach out and make contact with someone, it does not put them in your debt. No one is required to “pay you back.” Instead of approaching networking with the goal of gaining favors, try reaching out with curiosity. Contact interesting and relevant people and see what happens. Some of them will respond and some of them won’t. Learn about the people that follow up. Find out what makes them interesting and how you can help them — and don’t expect anything in return." In my world of referrals,  I find when I follow his advice, I ENJOY the time I spend with people. I've met some really great ones along the way.  Happy connecting!!

It's all about branding. If you can geotarget, it's better. The more people who see your brand eventually will recognize it and learn to trust it. (more) It's all about branding. Networking groups are great, but what is your ROI on all that handshaking, and business card passing. I would look for professional referral organizations (e.g. The Referrals Group, LeTip, BNI) who operate in your area and schedule a visit with a local chapter. You'll want to talk with the president of the chapter to ensure there is a strong B2B representation first. If you work the program consistently and follow up consistently, you will gain far greater ROI than any other marketing effort. All other avenues (advertising, SEO, etc) should be secondary to your focuses referral group.
