The answer to this question depends entirely upon the photographer's objective. There are no mobile device camera that will have a 600 mm zoom and can shoot 12-20 fps with roughly 142 megapixels. This (forementioned DSLR capability) would be both helpful and optimal particularly for sports photography. Additionally, as advanced as the enhancement software has become with mobile device phones, nothing yet compares to DSLR resolution combined with intended software enhancement. The answer is yes and no. If one's objective is to capture a few images without an emphasis on fine details or need for lens speed than the answer is a reluctant "maybe not necessary." If your objective is for a high res result and above par image with emphasis on quality of resolution, clarity and detail than the answer is no. My answer due to my own POV is "of course!'
