How We Got Started

We started as a touring company in 1990, producing shows all over New York and New Jersey. By 1992, we opened our first theater in West Long Branch, New Jersey, Thalia’s Theatre. When our building was sold, we became The Jewelbox Theatre and moved to the Seaview Square Mall in Ocean, New Jersey. In 2000, the mall was razed and we went back to touring. In 2005, we opened The Cafe Theatre in Toms River, NJ. The recession of 2008 forced us to close our doors. In 2010, we started the Grange Playhouse, Howell, New Jersey, and had a successful run until the pandemic hit. That was when we moved to Baltimore.

I don’t just think it, I know it! I write comedies and perform in them, so I am always trying to think of a funny angle on things.  People come back at me years later and remind me of something I said that made them laugh.  The proof is in the pudding! That might be empowering. All the best!

My theatre, The Grange Playhouse, is housed in a grange (fraternal  organization for farmers) hall, so I thought the following joke would be apropos: I tried acting in a theater for farmers. I got mooed off the stage. I’m currently working on an advertising campaign that focuses on my theater’s children’s plays and birthday parties. I’m hoping that the strategy will bring in more patrons for our adult offerings as well. There were two. Red Lion Inn, a charming, landmark old bar/restaurant, was knocked down to build a CVS because we really needed another one in town.  I now have a resentment towards CVS. They also knocked down the Lincroft Inn and Pal’s Cabin, also long-standing landmarks. As a result, I never patronize them. My other fave was Joyce Leslie, a women’s clothing store in Brick Plaza. The clothes were great and inexpensive. Thank goodness for Rainbow Shops, filling that niche!

I run a small theater company. If, for some reason  (as happens on occasion due to illness, bad plumbing, whatever) a show is canceled, I offer my patrons a two-fer to come back. I also donate 20% of the profit to the charity if the show is a fundraiser. (more) I run a small theater company.  I run a small theater company and I am on a very tight budget. Most of the advertising I do is free. They just say the Internet, they’re not sure where. On occasion I will spring for a paid ad, but I don’t see much more action from that than I do from all the free stuff.
