The sad part is you will probably never see that money if they haven't paid by now. Write it off as a loss and learn from the mistake - ask for a down payment of X% of total project invoice before working on any project - which is expected at the corporate level. However, because you are the "artist" that created that piece, or pieces, you have complete "legal" ownership of that work - regardless if you stipulate that within your contract (North America / Europe). Until you say its the clients, you don't give up the ownership rights to it. So you would skip small claims and go directly to litigation. Now your focus is on proving you created the work and that you have not been "fully" compensated. From here you can ask for any royalties to be paid for use, a portion of any and all profits gained through the use of that work or through association, any legal costs associate with getting your money (lawyer fees) and then you leave it up to the judge to make a "reasonable" decision. Depending on the size of company - if it was large you would have the money - this may cost you $10k - $15k and ruin the reputation and credibility of that business - if not put it out of business. This process may take a year as well. No business ever wins by going to court ... except the lawyers.

However, great design is not measured in initial cost. Its measured in value and results. I have found that if you can deliver the results a client wants, then exceed those expectations through value and service, the price is not an issue. In fact money is no longer part of the conversation. It becomes a minor detail at the end that has already been accepted.  I do have to agree with several commenters below. This is not a question to gain answers ... this is an Ad to promote your studio's belief system to the wrong target market. Its better suited for a Blog or broken down for social media posts. Which would garner you more business and a better use of your time. No offence to DJP Design LLC.

As part of your overall brand strategy, websites are integral to building a relationship with your customers and answering their questions and concerns "prior" to them contacting your business. Websites are not the magic answer to spend all your hard earned money and time on. A website is a significant piece of a larger strategy to promote and educate your customers of your business. It's about building a relationship and connecting with your customers online and your website is the best choice to do this. Websites have changed since the 90's and will continually change and evolve moving forward. The Net will always be here. Your business should have a place on it!

Outside the BOX: Brand Development has a process in place for every client that requests a testimonial, a review, as part of our client feedback form. A few days after we invoice our clients, we send out an simple, automated form that asks our clients about our service, their satisfaction and if they would write a testimonial on our social platforms. Links are provided so they dont have to go searching. Before we had this process established, we would ask through email, newsletters, client networking events or as part of our thank you card. We found this approach to be effective 30% of the time because its subtle and easily forgotten once the interest has left the client. The direct and simplistic approach is always better.Reviews and testimonials are SO important to a successful business, of any size, that a process should be set up to ask. A simple testimonial can convince an undecided customer to use your product or service. Not to mention the importance to your business's SEO and Google search results. A testimonial can increase revenue by 3% and build credibility an average of 80% of the time.
