How We Got Started

I have always been an entrepreneur and in 2000/2001 dot-coms were dropping like flies and MCI the company I loved and worked for was being sold out and off literally by Bernie Ebbers the destroyer of great businesses and thieving bastard that he is.

It was time to strike out on my own and i did using what little of my savings and 401K I had left, I do not know if it was the best move I could have made at that time (Verizon wanted me badly) BUT today I am happy and love what I do and love my customers. In hindsight it was the perfect decision for me at THIS time, even though I have questioned myself several times since THAT time.

I dealt with people that were very helpful but also left me alone so I could do my work. Normally in any factory they stand over you like a hawk and its hard to get things done when you have 10 people looking over your shoulder and giving you their version of the right way to do things. I would love to have the opportunity once again to perform networking (onsite or remote) or whatever other IT they may need in the future. Great company and very friendly people that know how to get the job done and leave people alone once they know their IT guy knows what hes doing. They basically let potential customers know if you are a good guy or a bad guy... I dont know if anyone remembers (giving away my age here) BUT back in the day you had plain old Yellow Pages but then TALKING Yellow Pages came along, and the difference between the two was night and day for Yellow Page advertisers and customers. Advertisers that were getting very little bang for their buck wit ha normal quarter page ad, were getting slammed with business when they opted for talking yellow pages.. MASSIVE difference. Human to human contact or a simple small nice honest review is always a good thing. This is how the BBB of today needs to approach things. You still will have good guys and bad guys BUT a little promotion for any business that pays to be a member of the BBB would go much further than "We show no complaints" Look I understand they could not promote certain businesses one over another BUT they could have a small geographic are limit as it pertains to the customers location and maybe have their software pull out the name of an A+ business or two randomly from within their database and close physically to the customer.. especially if customers have CALLED the BBB singing the praises of a certain businesses they have used and liked. Much better than "no complaints".. just think what you pay annually for a few of those "no complaint" calls :) Mike

Most of these small local businesses I work with call us when they have an issue like viruses or spyware or their email isn't working or a power supply dies on a computer or a computer is running slower than usual. Very seldom do we sell these small companies any add ons or software solutions or even monthly service solutions; and these small businesses probably account for at least 40% of our annual business and hard income BUT most of them simply do not need all of the bells and whistles. They just need a good tech on call who can handle issues when they arise without costing them an arm and a leg. Its NOT so amazing to me how loyal small businesses will be to a single tech IF they know he will be there within 30 minutes of a call. Its just common sense. I don't try to sell them a monthly service they will never use or push them into a service contract they dont need and the reality is, that I very seldom walk into any environment with a proprietary software installed on a network (other than Quickbooks) or a business that has more than 4 computers and MAYBE a server..so to even attempt to sell these businesses a service contract or monthly solution is doing them a disservice, when you simply need to be available to them when they need you.. thats all. And they will come back time and time again...and eventually you will have made quite a business out of simply servicing many small businesses that other techs didnt think were worth the time or effort. I believe too many techs/IT guys go after these BIG accounts when several smaller accounts will MORE than make up for what you believe you may be missing. You lose a big account you lose a big chunk of income and it can hurt your business badly and quickly.. you lose a small account you can normally have it replaced within a week or two...no harm no foul. We have held the number one spot locally on Google for computer repair service in our area for years.. simply because we use keywords in the body of our site and we keep an eye o how we rank..we dont use back links or links to other heavily used sites and we do not pay for adwords even though we have in the past... we simply target our local audience and it works great and has for a LONG LONG time.

Most are located in other countries even though there are several from the US as well. I have seen rates as low as 15$ for extremely nice logos IMO at least. Years ago I fell in love with a program from LaughingBird Software named Logo Creator. https://www.laughingbirdsoftware.com/ In addition there are several add on packages and graphics packages for Logo Creator including very unique images and clip art , business card designer add on, all kinds of items that take it from a simple design program to a great piece of software, and I have purchased most of these add ons and packages throughout the years and have never regretted a single purchase. i have made enough money selling business card designs to pay for every add on and graphics package I ever purchased from LaughingBird..so definitely a good investment.. the program really does pay for itself many times over. If you are the least bit artistic you can truly come up with some awesome designs using the program and it is extremely affordable. One of the best software investments I have ever made for sure, and again it has paid for itself numerous times. In addition to managing and owning my computer sales and service repair shop and hosting company we also offer vinyl cutting for local customers (windows, service vans etc) and we do a lot of logo design in house for these local clients BUT its not anything we do as a full time business per se. I am somewhat graphically inclined BUT my lead tech (also my son in law) is great at it, and has a keen eye, and creates good contemporary and fresh designs, so it only makes sense that I let him do the logo designs for local clients. My customers love his work. So in teh end there are plenty of options out there for logo design, many of them extremely affordable and some you can do yourself of farm out cheaply enough... it just takes some looking around. I guarantee you members here at Alignable will be some of the best designers around to be honest. I have checked out quite a few just surfing here and visiting different profiles and there are REALLY some great logo designers setup here for sure. Mike/Mitek

Have used Wordpress (many or our customers use WP and Joomla).. looking for great themes try elegantthemes.com.. they just released their Divi builder and plugin and their templates are beautiful and very reasonably priced + they offer lifetime memberships. I do not have any love for these FREE type hosting companies with prebuilt templates at all...places like Web or 1and1 or even GoDaddy... IMO its always better to have your own server or use a private or decent server and host your own domains BUT thats me.. not everyone thinks like me. To me most of the prebuilt templates such as those offered on Web etc look cheesy once people add their logos etc unless they actually have very professionally created transparent logos etc.. everything normally looks out of whack on some of the browsers used no matter what. What looks good in IE or Edge will look like crap in Chrome or Firefox or on a tablet or mobile device. You have to design for EVERY device these days and that in itself is hard to do even for expert web designers. Don't get me wrong. I think every business needs a good website and a decent web presence BUT you want a website that actually brings in customers... not run them away. Sometimes all of us could use a good web designer to keep things current. These days IF you have enough followers etc places like Facebook or Twitter or even Alignable Linked in etc can almost give you the best of both worlds..as much as I despise social media for teh most part it does work IF you have enough people visiting or liking or accessing your pages, which in all reality can easily replace a normal website if done correctly + updating is simple and quick...

Check it out... good FREE tool, runs unobtrusively in the system tray in Windows and works like a champ. Also I kind of like the normal Print Screen in windows 10 for quick screen captures that it autodrops into your onedrive account. Normally however I am performing full screen captures (Im in the computer repair business so I screen capture a lot as far as viruses/spyware are concerned for customer perusal) so for me Lightshot works just fine and is what I use most of the time.. before that I used Jasc Paint shop pro using Print Screen or Notepad++ with the old screen capture plugin Anyway lightshot is located here if anyone is interested. I will also look at Evernote just to see...

(more) We have been pitched a LOT but Im in a small town and its easy for me to stay ranked number one or at least on Googles page 1. To me it all comes down to price. Locally I can get a 1 inch wide by 2 inch high ad in our local newspaper daily 7 days a week, plus once in the weekly edition that goes out to every home free and all for the low low price of 225$ for 3 months. That little bitty black and white ad pays for itself 50 times over in any given month. We keep track normally especially with new clients as we always ask how did you hear about us or learn of us.. from a friend is ALWAYS number one and number 2 is always We saw your ad in the paper OR by a Google search. Past that answers go from business cards to postcards that we get printed up at VistaPrint for a little of nothing. Our lit night time sign gets a lot of views apparently..people always tell us they love our canned sign at night and we are in a RURAL area. Vinyl banners that we cut and make in house and yard signs...they say that helps a lot for us at least It has been this way for at least 5 years now or at least since I figured out it takes a certain KIND of advertising that works for MY computer repair, sales, and networking business and computer refurbishing and sales business, However it took me from 2001 until 2009 to figure it out....and Im sure I spent a LOT of unnecessary advertising dollars during that time. Word of mouth ALWAYS is our biggest promoter with Google and tle cheap little newspaper ad being close .. but word of mouth by far leads the pack in MY small community (New York we aint). There is no doubt SEO works IF performed correctly by the right company, BUT whether its worth what you will be charged is whats important in the end... The biggest issue is there are just way too many people running some silly piece of software once a week for your business and then pretend that is SEO.. therein lies the problem by far. Idiots trying to sell SEO that have no clue how it works at all. Finding a TRUE SEO company that gets guaranteed results and one where you do not have to take out a second mortgage to afford their services is the tricky part and the hardest part to find. If you DO find one that works, stick with them. They are FEW and far between. Its like what it costs to obtain and keep a customer... I mean if its costing you 8$ to attain and retain one customer to buy your 29$ product you better HOPE that SEO company you are throwing money at hand over fist is doing their job so you can get that 8$ down to 2$ or less per customer, otherwise you are simply throwing good money after bad. Thanks and Im no expert, and not pretending to be one, I'm just telling you what I have seen overthe years and what I believe to be true.. you know what they say about opinions...everybody has one.. All I know is what works for one guy in a town of 25000 people may not necessarily be the same thing that works for the person in a city of a million or even 100,000 potential customers. Thats whn you PROBABLY really do need a VERY SMART SEO company on your side Mike/Mitek Computers
