New Mexico Caregivers Coalition

About Us

The New Mexico Caregivers Coalition (NM-CC) was created to enhance and promote family and professional direct care workers, supporting their professional development and advancing issues of importance to the field of long-term and direct care. A caregiver is defined as any person who serves those who are elderly and/or disabled as their primary occupation.

The Coalition’s primary goal is to improve the quality of life for direct caregivers. We provide the space and opportunity for family and professional caregivers to define and advocate on topics of importance to them--be it higher wages, better benefits and workplace supports, or training and education needed for improving their own professional development and that of the field. As a result, direct caregivers become the voice for enhancing and promoting their professionalism and image of the field.

How We Got Started

The New Mexico Caregivers Coalition was formed in 2009 in direct response to caregiver worker shortages, few to no benefits they receive, little training and little to no recognition for those working in the field.

I don't necessarily allot time for it. I just make sure that I am responding to folks that need an answer. I always set an auto-reply that informs people of my absence and when I return so that they have an idea of when they will receive a response from me.

We have tried to improve attendance by doing a few different things, including offering refreshments or participant stipends, but neither seemed to work as well as we had hoped. The thing that has helped the most is that we added a note to the registration confirmation that stated that we offer our trainings free but that not canceling the registration prior to the training date could lead to not accepting future registrations from the individual. This has led to less no shows and individuals letting us know when they are no longer able to attend our training, so we at least know ahead of time that there will be less people than expected.

There are tax advantages to being a non-profit, such as being tax-exempt from stores (if you want to submit the paperwork involved). Some non-profits run solely on donations, but we are grant funded. So salaries are worked into grant proposals within the percentage allowed for administration. Earlier this year, we switched to CiviHosting since we used CiviCRM as our database system and I love them! They are always responsive when assistance is needed. If they cannot help us directly, they refer us to someone who can. (more) Earlier this year, we switched to CiviHosting since we used CiviCRM as our database system and I love them! I had the opportunity to meet with a social media consultant that was offering a free one hour consult and she recommended that we should be posting at least twice a day on Facebook and possibly more frequently on Twitter, because Twitter is in real time. We chose to post twice a day on all of our social media accounts. One post is an article related to caregiving and the other is something that is specific to our organization, such as a link to a page on our website or a training/event announcement. This strategy has worked well for us.

NMDCC has not held a silent auction, but I have assisted with silent auctions that other organizations have held. The items that did the best were usually spa packages and weekend getaways. Artwork also does well. (more) NMDCC has not held a silent auction, but I have assisted with silent auctions that other organizations have held.
