About Us

This House of Books is an independent community-owned full-service bookstore and tea room in downtown Billings, Montana. Using the cooperative model means that we give book lovers a chance to own a piece of the store and participate in its success.

Our book selection is broad, with a focus on local & Western books, science & nature, and children's books. With dozens of published authors as member-owners, we have an excellent cross-section of books by local authors.

Our tea bar includes close to 200 teas and herbs imported from around the world. Many of our tea blends are made right on premises.

The store also features tabletop games for sale as well as a growing library of board games to play in store. Join us for Board Game Night every Thursday from 5:30 to 8.

Still, I have a limit to how much reading I'm willing to do from a screen. Most of my reading happens with good old paper and ink physical books, or if I've got a need to multi-task, audio books will do in a pinch.

It's part of the zeitgeist and we all know a little about what life is like in those places thanks to the myriad of books we've read and films we've watched. Sure as a New Yorker will proclaim "Ay, I'm walkin' here," a Southerner will bless someone's heart, y'all. I think we love to start from a place of a familiar setting, knowing that some of those comfortable stereotypes will be there waiting for us, and then expand into interesting characters and events and story. There are a million stories to be told in any setting, but we do enjoy starting with the familiar. The film The Wizard of Oz is a wonderful example. If we had started in Oz it would have been jarring, unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but we start in Kansas, in black and white, on a farm. We knew what black and white farms felt like and we were at ease there, ready to process a new and exciting colorful world. We know from popular culture that The South has charm, The West has grit, New York has moxie, and California has avocados.
